shortcuts with a keyword of '*' can't be removed Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
It's bugged me in the past that I couldn't remove the first default shortcut ('www.*.com'). Today I discovered that you *can* delete it, but you have to remove its keyword first. I'm using 5.6 sneaky peek 4 (v611).

...But then it will come back again on the next launch. Instead, try editing it.

That shortcut specifies the default behavior when you enter a single word as the first path component; if you were to get rid of it altogether, you would have to type "http://" at the front of every web site's URL, which is probably not what you want. However, it's perfectly reasonable to want to change that default from supplying "www." and ".com", which you can do by editing its URL (e.g. to http://%@/).

I just realized (or re-realized... I think I've been through this before) that it comes back. Argh.

Yes, I've changed it to that in the past. I still think it's unreasonable to have a shortcut that can't be removed.

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to accomplish. What do you want the default behavior to be? Shouldn't one be able to see what that default behavior is and change it, or are you wanting us to hide that from the interface rather than listing it along with your own shortcuts? (Or do you want us to list it somewhere else?)

Or perhaps you're just wanting Remove to "work", by which you mean you'd like it to reset the preference to http://%@/ (or perhaps to nothing, i.e. it ignores unqualified input, or perhaps to something I haven't yet guessed)?

Setting it to http://%@/ is fine, and you're right that most people expect some sort of automatic behaviour. Exposing that in the shortcuts interface is a good idea. The problem is that there is no indication that * is a special shortcut, so it's frustrating when it works differently.

If it's always going to be there, then indicate that. The '-' button and the keyword field could be greyed out when the * shortcut is selected. The other option is just to allow it to be removed -- make it work like all the other shortcuts in the list. After all, there is a 'Reset' button on that pane.
