When you type a web address and press command-return, it opens in a new tab. But when you type a search in the search field and press command-return, it just beeps. That should open a new tab too!

We agree. For the time being you could use the location field to do your search (just prefix your search terms with the search shortcut prefix), holding command will open your results in a new tab as you'd expect.
