Yes, I understand. You need to re-save your perspective after you turn on the due date column. It sounds like your perspective is saved with it turned off. But even then, you may sometimes need to do the "apply it twice" trick I mentioned above.
 
I might be misunderstanding you, but if I were to re-save the perspective as you suggest, after hitting the switch button to go to planning mode and adding the Due column - wouldn't my perspective button then take me into planning mode from then on, instead of context mode where I want it to put me?

i.e. my problem occurs when I *leave* the perspective via the switch button - I don't have the problem when I'm in my context-view-of-next-actions perspective.

Note that you can control which view a perspective will leave you in. Switch back before hitting save, or toggle the setting in the perspective window.
