Icon databases and performance. Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
It looks like one of the areas that's causing some performance trouble is the Icon database.

OmniWeb 5.1.3 and final versions of 5.5 use a database that had a number of problems (like growing infinatley). The WebKit database that we're using now is an improvement however some people are still having trouble.

For a time during the OmniWeb 5.5 sneaky peeks we were using the default location for this database at "~/Library/Icons". We eventually had to switch back to our 5.1.3 database because the new one wasn't stable enough. This was enough for a lot of people to get a user default set that points to the "~/Library/Icons" database and not the one we want you to use now that we're once again using the WebKit database.

If you're seeing a delay when working with bookmarks and possibly even when loading pages you might check to see which database you're using. To do this open a terminal window and run this command:

(IMPORTANT I recommend backing up your preference file before doing anything here. The file you want to backup is: "~/Library/Preferences/com.omnigroup.OmniWeb5.plist" where ~ is your home folder.)

Code:
defaults read com.omnigroup.OmniWeb5 WebIconDatabaseDirectoryDefaultsKey
If it returns a message like this:
Code:
2007-08-08 15:33:12.811 defaults[5944]
The domain/default pair of (com.omnigroup.OmniWeb5, WebIconDatabaseDirectoryDefaultsKey) does not exist
You're using our default. If it returns a different path (like "~/Library/Icons") then you're not. To revert to using our default run this command:

Code:
defaults delete com.omnigroup.OmniWeb5 WebIconDatabaseDirectoryDefaultsKey
Hopefully that will help speed things up a bit.

My icon database is using the default path.

I noticed that after importing bookmarks (about 4200 items) into OW, phenomenon of delayed loading starts to occur.

While adding bookmark separator, there are occasions that the separator doesn't appear in the Bookmarks Page, but it does show up in the drop-down bookmarks menu. There is no more memory-eating-monster since this release (89886). Good job!
