Why, in some cases does this work:

offendingsite\.com

But in other cases, you need:

.*offendingsite\.com/.*
 
Theoretically, both should work. They differ only in the point that the latter requires a slash at the end of the server name to be present, else it won't match.

Do you have reproducable examples?

www.tvsquad.com, the video player in the right column. It only blocks for me if I do .*yourminis\.com/.*
 
Hm, I just tested—if I add yourminis\.com to the list of blocked URLs, the player is blocked for me ... ?

Yes, you're right. I have found it is often necessary to clear the cache to see some filters take effect, especially Flash.
