Make adblocking compatible with Firefox's Adblock (so we can use Filterset.G) Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
For those who don't know, Filterset G is a regularly updated adblock list which is more complete than any other that I know of:

http://www.pierceive.com/filtersetg/...02a-MERGED.txt (or if that link is broken, http://www.pierceive.com/filtersetg/ )

It would be great to have a way to import this list into Omniweb. I tried some way with plists and plutil but it kept failing at certain points.

Actually, the best I've found is the adblocking CSS file that ships with Camino nightlies:

http://www.caminobrowser.org/download/releases/nightly/

Download, open, then Show Package Contents on Camino.app and drill down to Contents -> Resources -> ad_blocking.css. Drag it out, put it where you'd like and set it as your default CSS file for all sites in OmniWeb - it'll make an enormous difference right off the bat. It's updated once a month. You can keep an eye on new commits of the file here:

Cool I will try that.

Direct link to file in CVS is http://lxr.mozilla.org/mozilla/sourc...king.css?raw=1

yep that works quite nicely. As it's display:none it also collapses the ad's space as I requested in another thread - so it's better than the in-built adblocking!

Thanks for the CVS link. I knew it was out there somewhere, but just couldn't be bothered (even though it will save me a lot of time in the long run... ;)

I've noticed quite a few false positives from this adblock CSS from Camino, where I've had to use the site-specific preferences to turn off the custom CSS. I have never had this problem with Firefox / Filterset G. Just a heads up to anyone who has started using it and has since found that some pages aren't loading properly to try disabling the CSS.

Odd; other than one or two false positives (perhaps once a month?) I've never had an issue. Any sites in particular?

Actually I think some of the problems I have had have been due to another problem which I will try and track down as I think it might be a bug somewhere else. (Briefly if I use adblock.css directly it works fine but if I use another CSS with @import url('adblock.css') it works most of the time but sometimes a page won't display at all.)

Meanwhile though, one site that continuously has problems for me is:

http://www.whitepages.com.au

Do a search for (example) :
business name: jb hifi
state: Victoria

The results page is completely screwed for me (no CSS). Does it work for you?

Well, I may give the Camino thing a try, but in any event, I'd like to see the ability to import other kinds of filters. In my dreams, this would be able to auto-update — give OW the download URL for the file, set an update interval, and forget it.
