I agree with this guy that the default document template in OmniOutliner isn't so great. To work around the problem, I've modified it to use different fonts and row spacing. Compare the before and after. I much prefer my version (naturally), especially since I have a larger display. Light-gray 11-point Helvetica is so hard to read on a 23" Cinema Display!
Here's the template. Note that it requires some special fonts: Optima and Stone Sans Sem ITC. "Special" meaning: I don't think they're bundled with OS X. However, I didn't purchase them "special", either. I think they're included with iWork, so if you have that, you probably have these fonts, too.
