Tasks that depends on an event Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
Hello, ninjas!
Could you help Me resolve a problem?
From time to time, I have tasks (in diverse projects) that depend on a special event and are able to be done only after the even.
i.e. I'm thinking whether to buy some apps, but there's a new iOS with some new features coming and I may change my opinion concerning apps aftermit's released.
So, I'd want to create tasks to buy those apps, but I don't want them to bother me now.
I've been thinking to do that by creating a new "wating" context, how do u think?

You could create a waiting context, but how will you know when to move the task out of the waiting state?

For tasks which you don't wish to see until some (known) future date, the usual practice is to use the start date field. Set the start date to the first date where you wish to see the task, and the task will be hidden from you whenever you view Available actions.

If the date isn't known, make an estimate. Update it as you get a better idea. You could even make yourself a separate repeating event that reminds you to check if the gating event has happened, and to update the start date.

Another approach is to use the Review feature, and set the review interval for the projects that are waiting on the event so that they are reviewed at an appropriate interval. When you do the review of the projects, you adjust those actions if the gating event has happened.

Apologies if I have misuderstood as I am new to OF. The sort of thing you describe here is what I thought was the purpose of a sequential project where you dont get a task to do until its predecessor is complete. I haven't had a chance to test the theory yet, but hope this is what it does.

Perhaps this method would be helpful. Consider a project called Evaluations ...

* Evaluations (project)
- New OS System (action group, sequential)
--- test new OS system (start date: when new OS is available)
--- buy new OS system
--- re-start other OS system dependent tasks
[note field: links to other tasks that should be restarted]

Each task that is in the note field has a start date that is either when the new OS is available or some time in the infinite future, so as to only be re-actived when it is available.

That was helpful, thanks.
