Can't paste image into shared layer Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
I'm using a shared layer as a header, and would like to include a logo as part of the header. When I attempt to insert the logo image into the shared layer, it always lands in one of my other layers instead. If all other layers are locked, it creates a new layer for the image, rather than placing it in the shared layer. The image is a png file.

Any ideas why this might be happening?

Thanks!

Check which layer has the active-layer icon (the pencil) for your canvas in the Canvases panel. It indicates which layer is active for editing (including pasting). If you've just created or worked on the shared layer, that's where it will be. To change the active layer, carefuly click in the status area to the left of a layer rectangle in the Canvases panel. You can also move the pencil by double-clicking a layer or by using the gear-wheel menu at the bottom of the Canvases panel.

It's a little confusing, but the logic seems to be:

Selecting a layer is done by clicking on the layer anywhere or by using arrow keys. Menu commands (Delete, Duplicate, etc.) act on the selected layer.

Setting the active layer is done by clicking in the left-hand portion of a layer, double-clicking anywhere on it, or by menu. This also selects the layer.

Selecting a layer without making it active is done by clicking on it outside the left-hand status area.

Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for!

But wait, there's more...

There's an exception to the first rule and third rules: Hovering over a layer shows the icons for its settings. Clicking on one of those changes the setting without selecting the layer. Also, I was wrong about double-clicking.

Perhaps a better click-action logic is:

There are five regions in a layer in the Canvases panel: lower right, left, the layer rectangle icon, the layer name, anywhere else.

The selected layers are indicated by blue highlighting. Selection makes a layer the target of applicable menu actions. (As it does everywhere in a Mac OS.)

Single-clicking:

The lower right region contains settings icons which appear on hover. If a setting is in a non-default state, its icon appears all the time. Clicking on one toggles its setting. The click does not change the layer selection.

The left-hand region contains drawing-status icons. Clicking there makes a previously-inactive layer active. It also selects the layer.

Clicking in the remaining area selects the layer without changing anything else.

Double-clicking:

Double-clicking on the layer's rectangle icon does the same thing as single-clicking in the left-hand drawing-status region: it makes the layer active and selects it.

Double-clicking on the layer name makes the name editable.

Double-clicking on a settings icon toggles its setting (once) and selects the layer.

Whew!
