Specify canvass size in pixels Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
Hello,

I am using omnigraffle to make illustrations for my website. Is it possilbe to set the canvass to be a specific size in pixels so I can just export my illustrations as jpegs and automagically they will fit in my html layout?

IE I want to make the canvass 500 x 300 pixels and save all my illustrations as 500 x 300 pixels.

Thank you, Tristan

Yes, you set it in the Canvas Inspector. If you set the ruler on the canvas to pixels, it makes it easier. I have made templates for different sizes of canvas with different scales of grid for my different purposes.

Thank you for your response, its much appreciated.

i did look at the canvass inspector, and could not find the option to specify canvass size in pixels. I just looked again, sorry to be a bore, could you give me any further pointers?

1. Show the ruler for the canvas (press command-R)
2. Change your ruler to pixels.
3. In the Canvas: Size inspector, input the dimensions you want for the canvas into the Width: and Height: fields:

N.B. there appears to be a bug here - the size is showing up as points (pt) although I have pixels selected. Is anyone else seeing that? I'm using the latest beta.

Yes, I'm seeing the same thing. Even when you type px into the box, it immediately switches to pt. Same here with the latest beta.

Thanks for checking - I've sent OmniGroup feedback.

@JKT,

Thank you very much for taking the time to explain that, its most appreciated.

FWIW, I had a response from Joel wrt to the pt "bug"

Yep, this is because pixels aren't a valid unit type for printing. So, we use points instead, as there are 72 points in an inch, which matches the old (somewhat out of date) standard for pixels.

Well, I hope Joel is reading this, 'cos for some things one wants to do, being able to set the size in pixels is more helpful. For instance, I prepare graphics for use in Keynote and the projectors here at Xiada are all 800x600, so to fit the template, I work with a canvas that's 576x360 pixels, or something like that. I'm using a 17" MBPro which is definitely not 72 pixels to the inch, so if I had to set up new templates using points, I'd have to mess around calculating what 576x360 pixels on this screen would be in points which would probably be inefficient in terms of sizing the elements of the diagram, or do it at 576x360 points and then have to scale the diagrams to fit the Keynote template ...
I'm sure there are many similar scenarios, too.

Hello,
Thanks for the canvas size tip, I was looking for this and it was right under my nose the whole time.
So its in points, thats the easy part, there are converters all over the web that can translate pixels to points.
This one is working out for me so far.
http://www.unitconversion.org/unit_c...ypography.html

100 px == 75 pts. Made a 75 x 75 pt square, and exported the canvas as a png. Image came out a clean 100 x 100 pixels.

It would be nice if I could just bang in pixels, but now I have a workaround and still have the full power of Omnigraffle!
