I've never archived my database because often I need to search through old completed items. Will archiving prevent me from searching through anything I've ever added?

Yes and no. If you archive something, it won't show up in searches of your database. However, you can just do File->Open Archive (which will open up a window very similar to the one you normally use) and do the search there to search your archive. It's only an issue if you archive and then need to do the search from another machine (the archive is not currently available except on the machine where you do it).
