Turning email into actions: send-to-omnifocus@omnigroup.com Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
We're not sure if it's gmail itself or the browsers that it goes through which are stripping out those links, but it's something we've observed in a couple different web mail systems, including Apple's.

The downside of the GET request method would be that it would leave a copy all the actions sent through the service in our server logs. We suspect that would be a problem for some customers.

Javascript or some other approach along those lines may be feasible, but the majority of customers seem to be okay with using Mail on their devices, so it's not a top priority at the moment...

Thanks for the reply. I thought it might be something that Chrome was doing.

Either way, it'd be a nice feature to have, but with all the other options you guys have, even a former Remember the Milk user like myself is more than content.

It would be great if send-to-omnifocus could at least link back to the email. Now you have to search for it when you want to act on the task. Also, it works as a fix, but requires too many steps.

Another thought...

Maybe some Chrome lovin' OmniFocus user would be willing to write a quick extension that doesn't "unblocks" the omnifocus links in Chrome/Gmail.

Thanks!

The iOS mail app doesn't support doing so. Omni would have to do something like keep a copy of any mail messages you linked to, and generate a URL that pointed to the copy on their server. A privacy nightmare for everyone!

Send feedback to Apple that you want iOS Mail to support opening a specific message by opening a URL, like the Mac version does.

They could include an attachment that opens in OmniFocus. That is, if Apple would approve it.

I've seen so many arbitrary extensions like .blueprint, but they could use something like .ofocus-action or .omniaction

When you open an attachment in the Mail app it gives you the option to pick which apps you want to open it with, in this case only OmniFocus would be able to open the attachment.

But that doesn't get you a link back to the original message. Sure, you can get something that will open in OmniFocus when you click on it in Mail, but you can't get something to store in OmniFocus, which when clicked will launch Mail and open that message. It can be done with Mac Mail and the OmniFocus for Mac clipping service makes use of it. Mail on iOS doesn't do anything with those URLs when you try to open them.

This functionality is no longer state of the art...

Other apps (I am not saying the other apps themselves are as good as OF) allow you to email directly into your own inbox (ie it is a 1 step process - fire and forget), which is a lot simpler and can be done on any device anywhere.

Toodledoo does it, but NirvanaHQ which looks extremely promising as a GTD app also does it (amongst others).

When will Omnifocus have this elegant solution?

Regards,
James.

It was never state of the art!

Mailing an action directly into your database requires that either you have a machine running all the time to handle incoming mail, or you have a copy of your database on an Omni server, and they have a machine running all the time. The latter means that they need to effectively run a subset of OmniFocus for thousands of clients, and it is possible that they haven't figured out an efficient, robust manner to do so. Also requires setting up some infrastructure to give everyone their own private email address to which they can mail their actions. Certainly nothing impossible, but something you want done right so that it can be trusted.
