Incorrect link won't open but has no explanation Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
I just came across this bug in another thread...

Command clicking on the following links should open a new tab

http://www.google.com

As you can see, the 2nd one probably won't load up google as the ) is in the link. However you should get some feedback. As it is, nothing happens at all when you click that link. In fact even normal clicking doesn't work. I'm not saying what the behaviour should be, just that as it stands, it doesn't seem quite right. (Esp. as the status bar gives feedback as if it was a valid link, even though OW is obviously doing some check on it when I click it.)

looks like a webkit bug. The trailing parenthesis doesn't break the url (since in general they are allowed) if you do this: (http://www.google.com/)

Sure but in the domain the ) is very much illegal (letters, numbers and hyphens are the only legit characters IIRC). [Edit: my point being that your link actually does work, presumably because it's a legit URL]

So with webkit bugs / behaviour, you basically can only notify Apple and then sit on your hands until they fix them? Must be frustrating :)

We file bugs with WebKit.org (which anyone can do). If we can fix it ourselves great but we don't have the resources that they do. And it isn't just apple, there are lots of people involved in this project.

For the record though, this may not be a WebKit bug. I'm not 100% sure on where the parsing is going wrong but since we match the behavior of Safari I'm guessing it's something that could be addressed in WebKit itself.

I hadn't realised Webkit was Open Source. I thought Apple basically just occasionally released their changes back to the KHTML guys who could then (try to) integrate them into KHTML. I guess I am a little out of date :)

FWIW you are right, it IS a webkit bug. I just checked.

More than just ocasionally sharing, KHTML has begun the process of joining the two branches together.

Also, this would be a good time to mention that we still like getting reports of webkit bug found in OmniWeb. We like to be able to track them and make sure we get important fixes merged in in a timely manner.

That's good news - I think that this is the last I read about it a couple of years ago: http://apple.slashdot.org/article.pl.../04/29/1556252 - back then the KDE developers weren't very happy with Apple at all!
