I can't seem to find a way to get the default line label geometry. I've tried setting it (parallel, a little bit of offset) and saving that as a favorite style, but that doesn't save the Geometry settings, just the font settings.

I don't know how to do that either, but you can apply the setting to multiple labels at once, which makes it a bit less painful. Use the Canvas: Selection inspector to grab them all, then the Properties: Geometry inspector to set them to be parallel and offset by the desired amount.
