So if I bought OF for the mac and for the iPhone, would I be able to just use it to sync my phone w/ my iCal to do list? that would be quite useful...

Just to make sure I understand you correctly: So, you'd enter to-dos in iCal on the Mac, then use OmniFocus for Mac and iPhone to sync them over to your phone, yes?
I think that should work, yes. It seems there must be an easier/cheaper way to do that, though. I don't use the iCal to-do database much, so I can't provide specific recommendations, unfortunately. :-(
