"Due Soon" perspective doesn't include include the inbox? Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
I have some items in my inbox that have due dates of "today", but have not yet been assigned a project or a context. When I click on the built in "Due" perspective, I don't see any of the items that are in my inbox.

I've also noticed that an item is in my inbox, it doesn't matter if I've assigned a context to it I don't see it in Context view.

Am I missing something?

I would never leave tasks in the inbox. The only time I leave tasks in the inbox is when I'm on the go and I just type something quickly into the inbox. The task is in the inbox because I haven't had the time to process it and put it in the correct place in my GTD setup. At the end of the day, I make sure to do my Daily Review and assign proper projects and contexts for my tasks. The inbox should not be a storage area to place tasks. Assign it a project AND a context.

I think there is a preference setting that says "Clean up inbox items that have...."

I have the inbox cleaned up automatically when both a project and a context has been assigned to a task. If it is missing one or the other then it stays in the inbox until I properly assign both. Check your preferences for this setting.

Put the task in a "miscellaneous" project. I have a single-task project that holds one-off tasks that don't have or need a project.

Do not leave anything in the inbox. It means that you haven't properly processed it.

Version 1.7.x doesn't include inbox items in context mode. Version 1.8 will. You can grab the 1.8 sneaky peek releases if you want to experiment with that.

If you prefer to stay on the current public release version, then wilsonng's advice is the current best way to live with the implementation of context mode.

Got it, thanks all.

Just out of curiosity, was there a philosophical reason why the inbox was not included in contexts? Or was it a bug?

I understand wilsonng's point about the inbox, it just seems silly to be able to add a context to an inbox item and not have it show up in the contexts view.

There's a school of thought that items in your Inbox are items to which you are not yet fully committed and/or haven't fully processed and so shouldn't appear as actionable. It's really a case of a feature where no matter which choice you make, a bunch of people will be unhappy you didn't go the other way. People who are using the software from a more GTD-centric viewpoint might prefer the behavior where Inbox items are quarantined until processed out into projects, and people who come from a different background might see this as unduly restrictive. The behavior is changing in 1.8, as noted, and if I understood correctly, there will be an option to preserve the pre-1.8 behavior for those who prefer it that way.

Hey, Bill, that option doesn't exist yet, does it (at least not as a visible preference setting)? I don't see it anywhere in r132128.

If the option exists now as a non-visible preference (terminal command), I'd sure like to know about it. I really dislike that my Inbox items appear in the Context lists.

Ken mentioned an option to inactivate the Inbox in a discussion with Curt in the thread about projects showing up in context mode. I haven't played with it myself.

Ah, very nice. Thanks, Bill.

I'm using that hidden preference to good effect.
