When I bring up the Quick Entry window and enter a new item and leave the context field blank, the new item appears in the "In Box" when I save.

However, if I add something in the "context" field, the new item DISAPPEARS when I save. Why is this? Any ideas on this behavior?

P.S. I am using Snow Leopard.

OF will auto-file stuff from the quick entry box on save if it would be filed by hitting Clean Up from the inbox. You can choose how much information should be on an action before it is auto-filed in the Data pane of the preferences.
