Limiting to one next action in context mode Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
Problems: I have multiple projects that are indepdent of one another. Like 100 (bug fixes). A lot of the actions are assigned to the same context.

In the morning, I pick how many projects I'd like to finish today. Then I enter context mode to get to work.

My problem is that this then displays all the next-actions available in that context - instead of just one. I want it to display just one. I also want the project name - so I know what I'm work on - so I can't just add them all into a big project and make them action lists. They are independent projects.

What I really want is a "limit" feature that limits how many actions I see in context mode to just one at a time, but if anyone has any other suggestions please help!

I didn't realize you could focus on projects in context mode. might be what i was looking for

Yes it's a very helpful feature that allows you " focus " no pun intended on a smaller scale. Things allows you limit the number of next actions you can see but , it tends to produce this " gnawing sense of anxiety " of wondering what you're not seeing . To quote David Allen author of " Getting things done " [which OF is largely based on ] " You can only feel good about what you're not doing, when you know what you're not doing " .

Ah, but finishing off a smaller list of actions gives one the sense of progress that enables another selection of focused projects to be tackled, resulting in real progress (if repeated often). Looking at the whole overwhelming list and dithering about like a deer caught in the headlights doesn't :-)

My suggestion would be to flag the actions you want to accomplish that day in project view, and then use the "Flagged" filter in context view to hide the other items from view.

A similar discussion has been going on the last few days in a neighbouring thread. Less specific, but lots of relevant suggestions ...

What David meant was not that you should allways look at all your tasks all the time. That would certainly be overwhelming. The weekly review is meant to refresh your memory on what you are not doing, make sure you dont miss anything etc. It is perfectly ok to be more project, rather than context, driven at e.g. work where you are nearly all the time in the same context @computer. I also find it better to focus than to create artificial contexts.

A tip: you can make discontinous selections of projects and then focus on them all as a whole, then switch to context view.
