The iPhone app already runs on the iPad. I use it for most of my work each and every day. Yes, it doesn't take full advantage of the larger screen size, but it works fine for ubiquitous capture (better than the iPod touch, in fact, because it is easier to type on the larger keyboard when in 2x mode, and it has a built-in microphone so there's no need to fish out a microphone to do an audio capture) and it works equally well for execution. Where it falls short is in those areas (planning, reviewing) which are likely to be improved by the new iPad application and which aren't substantially improved merely by having a few more lines on the screen or smoother rendering of UI elements, which are the main changes a straight port of the iPhone app would bring.

How is it important to one who already has OmniFocus on the desktop what Things does on the iPad? I think it is a pretty safe bet that the bulk of the OmniFocus (iPad) purchasers are going to be current OmniFocus owners in the short term. In the long term, that OmniFocus (iPad) came out in July instead of late June won't matter; what will matter is the features and support provided by the competing products.

I don't mind waiting, but why not quickly port the iPhone app for the iPad while you take your time delivering the app you want to deliver? Surely there is a way you could work out the financial charges between the two apps, and generate the sames revenue, couldn't you?

It would really help a lot of us who rely on Omnifocus and have built our workflow around it.
You can use the iPhone app on the iPad today.
