Yeah, I do that periodically. It seems to only work for notes that already exist though (which means that even repeating tasks will lose their visibility state, since that generates a new item in the DB), so you have to keep snapshotting the perspective. In other words, not really an alternative to a preference for always visible notes.

With the UI scripting support, one could make a script that told OmniFocus to Toggle All Notes twice, which seems to result in all notes being opened. You could use that script for launching OF, and also invoke it nightly from iCal to make sure any newly created items have their notes opened. Not as neat a solution as a preference to always have the notes be open, but something you can do today.
