Text rendered as gobbledegook Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
Can anyone explain why Omiweb turns some text into goddledegook.

It seems to be text which is in italic (e.g. certain headings in Wikipedia).

The same text is rendered perectly in Camino, but not in Omniweb.

Is there an explanation? Or is it just me that has this problem?

Here's shapshots, of the same page in the two browsers, to show what I mean.

This page displays fine for me. Are you using Beta 2?

If yes, check to make sure that you are using the right text coding. Go to View --> Text Encoding --> Use character set provided by server. This ought to fix it. If not, choose the right character set.

Thanks. Have tried that, and have tried Unicode, but it still comes up as gobbledegook.

I can't access Wikipedia at all from here so I can't tell you what happens with my set-up. But have you tried clearing your cache before trying again ... it could be that you're still opening the "gobbledegook" version in the cache

:)

I had the exact same problem the other day and even
emailed OW support about it, but found a solution before
they got back to me. I erased the font cache as per the instructions here:
How to reset user and/or all font caches
and restarted OW and that took care of it.

Good luck

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have flushed the OmniWeb cache and cleared all my font caches, but still it comes up garbled.

However, in Camino and Firefox it reads perfectly.

But in Safari it is garbled!

I don't know what that means . . . but hopefully someone out there might!

My roommate has the same problem with Safari. (She doesn't use OW.) She had 1000+ fonts in her /Users/username/Library/Fonts folder. She took them all out, reset her font cache, and that fixed it. She's moving the fonts back one at a time as she needs them. Haven't found the conflicting font yet, but we're sure it's one of them.
