Confusing files when after closing a document

Hi,

some weeks ago I geban to realize that OmniOutliner produces some extra files after closing one. These files appear sporadically next to the original one. The have exactly the same names except a ~ at the end of the name. Does anyone know where they come from? (Could it have something to do with the fact that I am working with my files from an external usb drive?)
