Whizzy Safari 3 Searching Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
What are the chances of getting nice in-page searching like the Safari 3 previews have been touting?

Now wouldn't *that* be cool ... ?

I do believe that feature takes advantage of some new Core Animation effects, and since OmniWeb is a Cocoa app, that uses OS X searching, I'm sure it would not be hard to include at all, once Leopard is out.

Aside from the snazzy f/x, why is this so fantastic? Essentially, this functionality exists alreasy, in OW, Fx, and Safari 2.

It's a far better search method. Instead of highlighting something and saying "find this even BRIGHTER chunk of text, it dims everything else and leaves what you want at a normal brightness. It's about a million times faster to spot what you're actually searching for.

There's a reason Apple's putting it in, it's functional, not just pretty.

If you look at OmniDazzle it's pretty clear that these sorts of effects, and ideas, are already familiar to the Omni guys.

I'm pretty confident that these sorts of effects will find their way into OmniWeb... eventually.

Check out ScreenSieve

It doesn't seem to work with OW properly, though. It only finds the word in ALT text, not in regular HTML text. Odd. Seems to work in Safari, although it highlights the phrase containing the word. In TextEdit, it works as advertised.

Perhaps this is why:
Quote:
Screen Sieve works with any application that supports the Accessibility APIs. Applications that do include Mail, Safari, Xcode and the Finder, as well as most other applications written in Cocoa and to some extent Carbon.
