I sometimes drag a URL to the tab bar, and try and put it into an existing tab, but the tab jumps out of the way. This is of course to allow making a new tab.

How about when moving the tabs, it does not leave a gap as large as a whole tab? If it just moved the tabs 20px or so, that would still be a big enough target to drop in if a new tab was desired, but would not cause so much annoyance when trying to hit an existing tab...

Standard Mac OS X behaviour a la Dock - hold the command key while dragging and the tabs will stay together. Drop onto tabs to your heart's content.
