I ddo already have my own website, though. Can a WebDav be accessed there?

You can also enable WebDAV on your personal Mac for free. It's not terribly difficult but does require mucking with some Apache config files (Apache is the open source web server that ships with Mac OS X). I imagine sooner or later, somebody will come out with a GUI utility for managing WebDAV, or maybe one exists already.
But the nice thing about syncing with a remote server rather than your local Mac is that you can sync from anywhere you've got an Internet connection. And your home Mac doesn't have to be on or exposed to the Internet all day long. Plus, with remote sync, you automatically end up with a remote backup copy of your database. So if your house were to burn down and your iPhone crushed by a beer truck, you'd still have your data.
