Back button doesn't go back at about.com Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
Several times in using sp4 tonight, when I pressed the back button, I didn't move back to the previous page. If I look at the tab's history, the page is in the history several times.

Try going to this page at About on visiting New York City:
http://gonyc.about.com/
It loads itself into the back button history twice.

Click on the New York Subway Hints link. Then look at the back button history. There are three of the first page and two of the subway page.

Clicking on subsequent links adds another page to the back history when you leave and two for the new page you arrive on/to.

Going back gets you stuck in-between.

Is there something about the About site? I can't make it happen with any others now that I'm trying, but I was pretty sure it did happen at others.

Same issue here. WebKit doesn't have the issue.

That said, in the site prefs, disable any form of adblocking and let us know if the issue continues. You may have to delete your cookies.

When I disabled ad blocking, the issue went away. Here's my guess: sites occasionally use redirects to crank up ad impressions, set more cookies... for ads. Disabling the method they're using to set the ads, cookies... then causes the site to try and reset them because the page checks each time it loads. If the appropriate data wasn't set, then it tries again.

I've seen some sites that will retry this a dozen times before it gives up. So each click on their site is a dozen pages in the history.

Egads, About.com is horrid with the ads showing. But, yes, that fixed the problem. I'd like a better fix. Or maybe I'll just move forward through the pages. Yuch.

Thanks, Forrest.

Seems to work fine here. I went to imdb.com, clicked on "now playing" in the top nav, then clicked back. Worked fine.

Go to http://www.imdb.com and click on The Wild under the New Releases in the left side panel. A lot of the other content worked just fine, but that one didn't. The Scary Movie 4 link also displays the problem.

Ok, I see the issue. Disabling ad blocking, in this case as well, seems to alleviate the issue.

Sorry, it was late when I posted that - you need to follow some links there. E.g. search for a film, follow the More... link for the full synopsis, or click an actor's name for their biography and then try to go back. As Forrest states, this doesn't work unless you disable your blocked URL list.

Count stores.ebay.com as another place where the back button is a problem. I won't be allowing the ads through there especially when I'm checking out copyright infringers. I show images only if I'm interested in the item.

This is the store of one of my real life friends:
http://stores.ebay.com/Dianes-Design...ework-Supplies
Click on the first item for sale. When you get to the item page and check the history on the back button, you'll see that the page is already there.

In a divergence from the about.com situation, I can press the back button twice and get back to the starting page. And turning off ad blocking does not fix the problem. The extra page is added to the back button's history regardless.

Edited to fix grammar bugs. Argh!
