As soon as Apple announced the push notification service, we immediately started requesting that they also implement time-based notifications, which is what we really need if we want to implement reminders in OmniFocus.
Push notifications aren't the right solution to this problem for a couple of reasons:
- We don't run a server which has access to your data, so there's no software which could push out the notification when one is needed.
- More importantly, even if we were to write such a server, the notification wouldn't be timely: it could only reach people when they're online. Most iPod touch users (half of the App Store customer base) don't have anywhere close to full-time Internet connectivity for their device. (Often they only have Wi-Fi connectivity at home.)
We love the design of the push-based notification system, we just want a way to schedule similar notifications locally, in advance, on a schedule (rather than only remotely and "as soon as possible"—which might not actually be any time soon).
