The RSS application Reeder, and other apps, have a drag-to-act action I love. You can (e.g.) drag right to mark as read/unread, and drag left to mark as starred/unstarred. Works remarkably well.
There's probably work to be done to incorporate that and still have the swipe-to-delete action though.
