Can someone explain to me what a ZIP file is, and why one day (e.g. yesterday) I would have 2 ZIP files, and why today I would have 127? Is there a way of consolidating ZIP files, and keeping the volume low?

They are an efficient, compressed way of storing the transaction (changes) you make on various machines. Each change generate a new .zip file, and they are merged when everything synchronizes.
For suggestions/tricks on minimizing the #, have a read of some of the "slow sync time" threads, they explain it well.
