How can I arrange it that any subitem I create inherits the properties of the superitem? I.e., how can I make sure that the color of a new item is the same as the "group" it is created in, and such... ?

How can I arrange it that any subitem I create inherits the properties of the superitem? I.e., how can I make sure that the color of a new item is the same as the "group" it is created in, and such... ?
